Abstract

The aim of this study was determine the effects of oral administration of herbal oil mix on immune system in foals. 16 foals assigned to equal groups as treatment and control. Routine vaccination schedule was performed on all animals in the study. Drinking of herbal oil mix was begun before 7 days of vaccination. After vaccination, treatments were sustained one week. The vaccination day was considered of zero. Blood samples collected from all animals at days -7th, 0th, 7th, 14th., 21st. All blood samples were analysed for ALT, AST, GGT, Glucose, Total Cholesterol, Triglycerides, BUN, Ca, P and Ig G. There were no significant differencies on Serum ALT, Triglycerides, Total Cholesterol, BUN and Ca concentration between groups throughout the study. There were significant diffirencies on serum P (vaccination day) concentration; serum AST (7th day) concentration; serum GGT and Glucose (21st day) concentrations between groups. Also, serum Ig G concentrations was higher in treatment foals than control at all sampling period after vaccination (0th, 7th, 14th, 21st). As a conclusion, orally administration of herbal oil mix to foals at before and after vaccination period was shown some positive effects on immune system and there was no negative effect on liver and metabolism.
