Abstract

In this study, deposition pressure and temperature values changed in order to determine optimal growth conditions for (111) oriented Y 3 Fe 5 O 12 (YIG) thin films on (111) oriented Gd 3 Ga 5 O 12 (GGG) substrate by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique. Deposition pressure changed from 100 mTorr to 250 mTorr with 50 mTorr steps considering physical structure of plasma plume during growths and 560, 640, 720 and 800 °C selected as deposition temperatures in order to see temperature effect in this pressure range. Except for pressure and temperature, other variables like number of pulses, repetition frequency, heating and cooling speed, target-substrate distance, laser excitation energy and annealing conditions fixed during depositions. X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) techniques were used in order to examine prepared thin films. Since YIG and GGG have the same crystal structure and have matching XRD data, Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDX) was used to determine whether growth was successful. The analysis showed that YIG/GGG thin films were successfully grown and the optimum growth conditions were obtained at 100 mTorr and 800 °C.
