En çok kullanılan altlık malzemesi odun talaşıdır. Bunun alternatiflerinden bazıları saman, kağıt kırpıntıları, parçalanmış mısır koçanı ve diatomit olarak sıralanabilir. Altlık malzemesinin birkaç defa üstüste kullanılması bazı araştırıcılar tarafından uygun görülmüşse de normalde bir üretim sonunda altlığın tümü dışarı atılır ve bir sonraki üretim döneminde yeni altlık malzemesi kullanılır.
