Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) has become closely intertwined with modern weapon systems, shaping international peace, security, and military competition. Autonomous systems and AI technologies are transforming warfare by redefining operational capabilities and defence strategies. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) stands as a pioneering actor in the Middle East, integrating AI into military operations through advanced platforms that enhance intelligence, surveillance, targeting, and cybersecurity. This study aims to examine the role and effectiveness of AI-enabled autonomous weapon systems within the UAE’s defence strategy. It employs a neorealist framework to analyse how AI integration serves as a tool for survival and power maximization in an anarchic regional order. The analysis focuses on the UAE’s investments in autonomous drones, AI-assisted decision-making, and electronic warfare, highlighting their potential to increase efficiency and overcome manpower constraints. Findings suggest that while AI enhances military effectiveness, it also generates significant risks, including operational reliability and cybersecurity vulnerabilities. The study concludes that the UAE’s AI-driven defence modernization reflects a neorealist balancing behavior, reshaping its military posture and contributing to broader regional transformations. Ultimately, the integration of AI acts as a strategic force multiplier while simultaneously introducing systemic vulnerabilities, reinforcing the need for balanced strategies that combine technological innovation with accountability and security governance.
