Abstract

In this article, one of the main factors behind the southward and southeastward migration movements of the Oghuz living in the Dasht-i Qipchaq region of Central Asia during the 10th and 11th centuries is examined as the climate factor. The study particularly highlights how drought and the scarcity of pastures during the Medieval Warm Period compelled nomadic communities to seek new living areas. The impact of these natural changes on migration processes is evaluated not only from a political and cultural perspective, but also in terms of ecological and climatic dimensions. The article further investigates the migration routes of the Oghuz towards Khwārazm and Khurasan, providing detailed explanations of the geographical and economic reasons why the Cana Darya branch of the Syr Darya and the Aqcha Darya (Baraktom) valley of the Amu Darya emerged as prominent migration corridors. Moreover, it discusses the political and social relationships established between the Oghuz and the ruling dynasties of Khwārazm, namely the Mamunids and the Altuntashids, along with their impact on the region’s demographic and geopolitical structure. Within this framework, the entry and settlement processes of the Seljukids in Khwarazm are analyzed in the context of local political alliances and power struggles.
