Abstract
The formation and development of the working class in a country must be examined within that country's unique political, economic, and social conditions. Therefore, when we look at the process in Turkey, we observe a much later process of proletarianization compared to the West. The capitalist economy necessary for the emergence of the working class in Turkey began to develop during the final years of the Ottoman Empire. Especially after the 1950s, the rapid development of industrial capitalism in Turkey led to an increase in the number of factories. As peasants who had become detached from the land were dispossessed and began working in these factories, and as the state repealed laws that had, for a time, prohibited unionization and the formation of working-class organizations, the working class was able to achieve important gains through class struggle. During this period, both the number of trade unions and unionized workers increased, and labor confederations were established. Working-class movements continued with fluctuations until the 2000s, during which workers secured significant social and economic gains. On the other hand, it has been argued that after the 1970s, the policies of neoliberalism, which came to dominate the country's economic structure, aimed at undermining unity and solidarity, began to weaken the class consciousness that prevailed among the working class. During this period, trade unionism in Türkiye developed in relation to the country's political, financial, social, and economic structure. In our country, trade union activities have largely been carried out within the framework of rights granted by the state. For this reason, trade unionism has been influenced by changes in the political structure. Accordingly, trade unionism has been examined by dividing it into specific periods based on the relationship between trade unions and politics in the country.
