Abstract

Objective: In order to prevent iron deficiency, which is critically important for growth, neurological development, and immune function in infancy, a routine iron prophylaxis program has been implemented in our country since 2004. However, there are few studies in the literature on parental compliance and awareness levels, which determine the effectiveness of this preventive health service. This study aims to evaluate parental compliance with iron prophylaxis and their awareness of the importance of iron supplementation for their children’s health and development. Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional descriptive study, a questionnaire was administered through face-to-face interviews to parents of infants aged 0-1 years who visited the Pediatric Health and Diseases Outpatient Clinic of Kırıkkale University, Faculty of Medicine Hospital between February and March 2025. Results: It was observed that 93.6% of the participants (n=109) were recommended iron supplementation; 74.3% started using it; and 49% continued regularly until the baby reached one year of age. The most common reasons for not using or discontinuing iron supplementation were forgetfulness (36.2%) and side effects (32.7%). Compliance rates were statistically significantly higher among parents who were informed by healthcare personnel and had previously administered prophylaxis to their children. Although 78.9% of parents considered iron important, awareness was largely limited to "blood formation" (45%), with less knowledge of its critical roles in brain development and immunity (18%). Conclusion: The results show that despite a relatively high level of awareness, there are shortcomings in the implementation of iron supplementation, which is routinely provided free of charge by the Ministry of Health. To increase compliance with iron supplementation, families should be encouraged to use it at each visit to the health center, and informed about the importance and side effects of iron supplementation.

Demir desteğine uyum oranını artırmak için bebeğin her sağlık merkezi ziyaretinde, aile kullanım konusunda teşvik edilmeli, demir desteği önemi, yan etkileri konusunda bilgilendirilmelidir.
