Abstract
This study examines the maritime terminology contained in the military dictionary Lugat-ı Askeriyye, presented to Sultan Abdülmecid in 1844. This work, housed in the Rare Books Library of Istanbul University, aims to systematically compile the technical concepts required by the army within the framework of the Ottoman Empire's modernisation efforts. Although the author is unknown, the preface of the work clearly states that the aim was to standardise military education by translating military terms from foreign languages into Turkish. Lugat-ı Askeriyye consists of a total of 516 entries, 92 of which are technical terms directly related to the field of maritime affairs. The terms included in the dictionary are maritime-related terms such as ship types, technical equipment parts, wind names, sail types, and rank names. The study examines the transcribed texts, etymological origins, and original definitions in the dictionary of the maritime terms included in the dictionary. These terms prove the historical links between the Turkish maritime language and the maritime language expressed as the common language of the Mediterranean. It was observed that most of the terms examined are of Italian and Greek origin, while Arabic, Persian, French and English elements have also been incorporated into the terminology. In this study, the dictionary entitled Lugat-ı Askeriyye is first introduced; the definitions of the nautical terms contained in Lugat-ı Askeriyye have been transcribed into the Latin alphabet using transliteration, and information is provided on the origins and meanings of these terms. The Lugat-ı Askeriyye is not merely a dictionary, but also an important work demonstrating the technical capabilities of the 19th-century Ottoman navy. It is believed that the nautical terms contained in the Lugat-ı Askeriyye will contribute to nautical terminology.
