Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the effect of self-efficacy levels on intestinal cleansing in patients undergoing colonoscopy. Methods : The descriptive study was conducted between September and June 2018. 242 volunteers who underwent colonoscopy at a state hospital endoscopy unit were included in the study. Ethics committee approval was obtained prior to the study. The data of the study were collected by using personal information form, Boston Bowel Preparation Classification (BBPS) and Self-Efficacy-Proficiency Scale (SESP). Descriptive statistics were analyzed using Mann Whitney U test and Kruskal Wallis test and chi-square test. Results: The mean age of the participants was 53,31 ± 14,19 years and 55,4% of them were female. It was found that 60,7% of the study group underwent colonoscopy for the first time, and 87,2% of them followed the recommended pre-colonization regimen. It was determined that 45% of the subjects had two points of BBPS. Prior to colonoscopy, 79,3% of the patients and 65,3% of the patients had complaints. Abdominal pain (53,3%) and fatigue (57,4%) were reported most frequently before colonoscopy. Mean scores of SESP scores were 71,74 ± 8,40 and general self-efficacy-competence perception was found to be moderate. Conclusion: It was determined that pre-colonoscopy patients were in compliance with the preparation regimen, and that self-efficacy-adequacy perception was not a factor affecting the compliance with colonoscopy preparation instructions.
