Abstract

Aim Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), divided into two main groups as Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, is a chronic inflammatory disease which affects the life quality of patients. This descriptive and methodologic research aims to describe the validity and the reliability of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Quality of Life Questionnaire (IBD-QOL), published in 1992 and validated in different countries, for Turkish population. Method In the research, 176 conscious, literate and willing adult patients admitted to the Dokuz Eylül University Inflammatory Bowel Diseases Clinic throughout March 2013 and May 2013 were included. To calculate the reliability, the questionnaire was applied to 30 selected patients for a second time. The IBD-QOL has 36 questions and the factor analysis structure has five dimensions; "Systemic symptoms", "Bowel symptoms", "Functional impairment", "Social impairment" and "Emotional function". The content validity of the questionnaire was tested with the opinion of an expert. Reliability evaluation was made via inner consistency and item-total correlation. Results The Cronbach-alpha coefficient was found to be 0.951, and all item-total correlation values significant with p values 0.50. According to the factor analysis, which was applied to test the structure validity, the questions were collected under four factors and with this factor structure, 62.77% of the total variance was explained. Conclusion According to the results, the IBD-QOL was proven to be reliable for Turkish patients and the validation of the scale was successfully completed. Keywords: inflammatory bowel disease, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, quality of life, questionnaire
