Abstract
Campylobacter species, despite being among the causative agents of acute bacterial gastroenteritis, rarely may lead to invasive diseases in immunosuppressed and elderly individuals. Campylobacter is a microaerophilic, nonfermentative, Gram-negative bacterium. Although it may seem difficult to cultivate Campylobacter species under normal laboratory conditions due to their microaerophilic nature and selective medium requirements, it becomes possible when appropriate conditions are provided. Although molecular diagnostic methods targeting gene regions have emerged in the diagnosis of Campylobacter species with improved diagnostic laboratory services, isolation of the bacteria is still the gold standard method. In this case report, we present a 56-year-old female patient who was diagnosed with epithelioid carcinoma (colon and rectum) about four months ago, underwent colostomy by removal of sigmoid colon and rectum together, received chemotherapy treatment in the medical oncology clinic of our hospital, Campylobacter coli was isolated from blood culture, and was treated with cure and discharged.
