Abstract
The purpose of this study is to develop a valid and reliable scale to assess primary school teachers’ self-efficacy in teaching first reading and writing, as well as to determine how their self-efficacy varies according to demographic characteristics. To this end, a survey design was adopted for the study. The data collected from two different groups consisted of 588 primary school teachers working in the provinces of Yozgat and Uşak, selected through convenience sampling, and 518 primary school teachers working in the province of Trabzon, selected through cluster sampling. In the first phase of the study, a 29-item self-efficacy scale for teaching first reading and writing was developed by the researchers following validity and reliability studies. In the second phase, independent t-tests and one-way ANOVA analyses were conducted to determine the effect of primary school teachers’ demographic characteristics (frequency of teaching first grade and participation in in-service training related to teaching first reading and writing) on their self-efficacy in teaching first reading and writing. The results of the analyses revealed that in-service training on early literacy instruction for primary school teachers had a significant positive effect on their self-efficacy in teaching first reading and writing. In addition, the research findings indicated that there were significant differences, based on subdimensions, between primary school teachers’ experiences in teaching first reading and writing and their perceptions of self-efficacy. In the dimension of “independent reading and writing”, the self-efficacy of teachers who had provided this instruction three or more times was found to be significantly higher than that of their colleagues who had only done so once. In the “initiation and progression in first reading and writing” dimension, it was determined that teachers with four, five, or more teaching experiences possessed higher self-efficacy than those who had taught only once. In the “motivation/self-confidence” dimension, teachers with five or more teaching experiences were found to be significantly more self-efficacious than those who had taught one or three times. Finally, in the dimension of preparation for reading and writing, it was found that teachers with five or more teaching experiences demonstrated significantly higher self-efficacy compared to those with only one teaching experience.
