Abstract

This research was carried out to reveal the potential habitat distributions of two pleurocarpous mosses (i.e., Brachytheciastrum velutinum (Hedw.) Ignatov & Huttunen and Hypnum cupressiforme Hedw.) and two acrocarpous mosses (i.e., Grimmia pulvinata (Hedw.) Sm. and Grimmia trichophylla Grev. in a semi-arid area in Türkiye, utilizing the Maxent model based the Geographic Information System (GIS). In addition, these indicator plants are easily affected by environmental factors such as climate change, air pollution, and human pressure. Therefore, determining the influences of environmental factors on the occurrence of the mosses is crucial in terms of assessing an effective conservation strategy considering the current and future environmental conditions. The MaxEnt method performed better for pleurocarpous mosses than for acrocarpous mosses in predicting species distributions. The most important variables contributing to the model explanatory were canopy cover, stand development stage and precipitation, canopy cover and stand development stage provided the most important knowledge not found in the other variables. Each moss species responds differently to environmental factors, necessitating individual environmental analyses for accurate evaluation.
