Abstract
The purpose of this study is to examine the experiences of research associates concerning quality and accreditation processes and the metaphoric perceptions they had developed as a result of these experiences. For data collection, a form was used that included closedended questions to gather faculty members’ personal information and open-ended questions to explore their metaphorical perceptions. The study employed a phenomenological design, which is one of the qualitative research methods. Descriptive content analysis was carried out. The study group consisted of 48 academic staff members in total, including 30 females (62.5%) and 18 males (37.5%). Age range of the study group was 21-62 years and their mean age was found to be 46.24 years (x̄=46.24, sd=11.98). A total of 48 metaphors were created under five categories. The categories were “Process”, “Quality”, “Inspection/Evaluation”, “Balance” and “Changing Image”. In the process category, 15 metaphors were created. The most frequent metaphor was the “renewal” metaphor. The metaphors in this category indicate that the concept of accreditation evolves and develops over a specific period of time. In the quality category, 14 metaphors were created. Through the metaphors they created, the participants expressed that accreditation represents an indicator of quality. One of the most frequently used metaphors in this category was “Warranty Deed.” In the Inspection/Evaluation category, 11 metaphors were generated, with participants associating accreditation with processes of inspection and evaluation. The most commonly created metaphors in this category were “mirror” and “inspector.” In the Balance category, four metaphors were produced. Participants associated accreditation with the idea of maintaining balance and created metaphors aligned with this perception. In the Changing Image category, four metaphors were also created. The “democracy” metaphor was used to emphasize the positive and strong aspects of accreditation. Conversely, the “make-up” metaphor represented efforts to mask flaws and highlight only the favorable sides of accreditation. Similarly, the “earphone” metaphor symbolized a selective hearing—ignoring criticism while focusing only on what one wants to hear. Overall, a holistic analysis of the participants’ metaphors reveals a generally positive perception of accreditation. *This research was presented as an oral presentation at the IX.
