Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the appropriateness of doctoral theses in the fields of social sciences and humanities in terms of language and expression, and to identify common expression errors. Utilizing a criterion sampling method, 12 universities across Türkiye—each representing a Nomenclature of Territorial Units for Statistics (NUTS) Level 1 region—were selected. From each university, two doctoral theses published in between 2017-2022 were selected for sample. The study employed a qualitative research model based on document analysis. Within this framework, the “abstract” and “introduction” sections of 24 theses were examined according to principles of expression and types of errors. The findings revealed a total of 312 language and expression errors, with the majority pertaining to the principle of “ accuracy”, and approximately 70% resulting from grammatical mistakes. Additionally, 50 errors were associated with the principle of “clarity”, and 44 with “conciseness”. In terms of error types, the most frequent issues stemmed from violations of punctuation and spelling rules. These were followed by the incorrect use of affixes, unnecessary word usage, structural deficiencies, and the use of words in inappropriate contexts.
