Abstract
The study aims to investigate the impact of higher education on regional development in Level 2 regions in Türkiye for the period 2008-2023 using the panel data method. Three separate models, namely Model 1, Model 2, and Model 3, were established to analyze the impact of higher education on regional development. Regional GDP per capita is used as the dependent variable representing regional development, while the number of colleges-faculty graduates, the number of master’s degree graduates, and the number of doctorate graduates are used as independent variables representing higher education. In the analyses, cross-section dependence, panel unit root test, F, LR, LM, Hausman Tests, Driscoll-Kraay model estimation, and panel Granger causality analyses were performed, respectively. The study found that there is cross-section dependence, all variables are stationary at level values, and both unit and time effects are present. According to the Driscoll-Kraay estimation results, the number of college or faculty graduates in Model 1, the number of master’s degree graduates in Model 2, and the number of doctorate graduates in Model 3 are statistically significant at 1% significance level and positively affect regional development. According to the panel Granger causality test results, there is a bidirectional causality between the number of faculty graduates and regional development, the number of doctorate graduates and regional development, while there is a unidirectional causality from the number of master’s degree graduates to regional development. It is concluded that higher education increases regional development in Level 2 regions.
