Abstract

The Covid-19 virus, which started in December 2019 and continues today, has a negative impact in many areas, especially in education, in the world and in our country. In many countries, educational institutions were closed to limit or reduce social distance and mobility, and the distance education process was immediately started in these institutions. After the first case in Turkey in March 2020, primary, secondary, and higher education institutions were closed, and trainings were given remotely (online) in this process. However, there were some difficulties in this process in applied courses. Especially in the departments of higher education institutions that provide applied education (medicine, dentistry, nursing, architecture, planning, design, etc.), giving practical courses via distance (online) education has caused students to experience difficulties. In this study, the effects of the distance (online) education process in the undergraduate education of the architecture department, where applied courses are intense, were investigated. In the study, undergraduate students of Dicle University, Faculty of Architecture and Department of Architecture were selected. A survey study was conducted with the participation of 214 students, which enabled the determination of the positive and negative conditions brought by distance education and the way of thinking and behavior of the students about this process. The obtained data were evaluated in SPSS 22 statistical analysis program, Chi-Square and Fisher-Exact Probability Tests were used. The findings of the research show that students and educators gained an important new educational experience in distance education during the Covid-19 Pandemic period, although there were difficulties in the initial stages in departments requiring applied education such as architecture; Compared to face-to-face education, distance education has advantages and conveniences in different dimensions, therefore it may be beneficial to integrate it into the education system; shows that there is a need for new research to evaluate this experience with all its dimensions.
