Abstract

The earthquakes on February 6, 2023, centered in Kahramanmaraş, starkly exposed the vulnerability of settlements along the East Anatolian Fault Zone. This study aims to analyze the multi-dimensional impacts of these earthquakes on Battalgazi (Malatya) from a geographical perspective and to evaluate the district’s post-disaster urban resilience. Adopting a mixed-methods research design, the study integrates field observations, a survey of 110 earthquake survivors, and secondary (institutional) data. Additionally, an earthquake hazard map of the district was generated using the Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (FAHP)—a multi-criteria decision-making method—based on ten parameters and validated with damage data from the February 6 earthquakes. Findings indicate that the disaster radically altered the demographic structure, settlement patterns, and economic activities, revealing that physical and economic resilience remain more fragile than social resilience. The hazard map demonstrated a prediction accuracy of approximately 80% when compared with damaged buildings, confirming that high-risk areas are concentrated in the central, western, and northwestern parts, which are characterized by alluvial soils. The study offers policy recommendations based on risk reduction strategies, community engagement, and the "build back better" principle to enhance Battalgazi's resilience against future disasters.
