Abstract

Emotion recognition is the process of inferring the emotional states of individuals by observing their facial expressions and is an important part of social life. It is stated that these characteristics of individuals who are indecisive, restless, anxious, touchy, emotional, tend to get upset or angry easily, have difficulty returning to normal by giving excessive emotional reactions even to small problems are the personality traits of neurotic individuals. In this study, the relationship between neuroticism and recognizing emotional expressions of different intensities was examined. 55 people participated in the study. Participants were presented with a task consisting of 81 stimuli, including 9 emotions and three different intensities. The results showed that there was no significant relationship between the level of neuroticism and the general emotion recognition score, nor between the level of neuroticism and the emotion recognition scores at low, medium, and high intensity levels. In binary situations, a significant correlation was observed only between the scores for defining embarrassed as upset and the level of neuroticism. The findings were discussed in the light of studies in the literature.
