Abstract

Steel wire ropes in elevators are subjected to different damage types having different extents depending on operating conditions. In this study, variations in axial lifting capacities of damaged samples have been investigated. Three different damages have been created on the rope specimens at laboratory environment by considering discard criteria of elevator ropes. The tensile strength loss amounts of damaged rope samples have been determined by conducting tensile tests. In this study, 6x19 Standard steel wire rope with independent wire rope core IWRC which is also appropriate for elevator systems has been used. The obtained data have formed a source based on experimental results helping about to select rope, the periodic maintenance of ropes and the discard criteria for elevators. The most critical failure type has been found as 16h corrosion for rope investigated.
