Abstract
In the study, S235JR and S355JR structural steels used in the manufacture of power transformers and boilers were joined by Metal Active Gas (MAG) welding. Microhardness, notch impact and bend tests were carried out on the resulting welds. In the microhardness measurements, the highest hardness value (245±5 HV) of all the joints made was measured in the weld metal of the S355-S355 material pair joined using welding current value number 3. The microhardness measurements showed that although there was not much difference in the joints where the highest welding current was used, there was a slight increase in hardness values compared to other currents. In addition, the highest hardness values in all joints were measured in the weld metals, followed by the heat affected zone (HAZ) and the base materials. As a result of the notch impact tests, the highest impact toughness of all joints was measured as (81 J) in the weld metal and (103 J) in the HAZ of the sample joined using welding current value number 1 from the S235-S235 welded material pairs. The notch impact test results showed that the impact toughness values of the HAZs were higher than those of the weld metals. In addition, because of the experimental studies, it was found that as the hardness values increased, the impact toughness values decreased. Finally, because of the bending tests, it was found that there were no defects in any of the welded specimens.
