Abstract

This qualitative–quantitative exploratory analysis investigates descriptive patterns linking regional levels of artificial intelligence adoption, trade facilitation implementation, and estimated potentials for reduction in international trade costs. By using regional aggregates (N=7) from the UN Global Survey on Digital and Sustainable Trade Facilitation (2025) and McKinsey's State of Artifical Intellegence Report (2025), ridge regression analysis is used solely with the purpose of stabilizing numerical values due to high multicollinearity Variance Inflation Factor (VIF) > 120. The values derived (β ≈ -0.31 to -0.34) are not interpretable within the context of causality or inferential explanation, but only indicative of certain heuristics that correspond with the law of diminishing returns, especially within the early adopting groups. Considering the extremely small sample size, proxy variables, and cross-sectional nature, all the results are only to be taken as pattern-generating inputs within the formation of hypotheses for future, more robust research. The results are therefore not to be taken as evidence of inference for regression or for effect sizes but only for descriptive patterns.
