Abstract

This study aims to empirically analyze the determinants that encourage companies to engage in greenhushing behavior, using data from a sample selected based on specific criteria from among the companies listed on the BIST Sustainability Index. For this purpose, firstly, sustainability performance scores and sustainability disclosure scores were calculated using data from 82 companies included in the sample for the year 2024. The companies in the sample were divided into two groups, green quiet companies and green parrot companies, by comparing their calculated sustainability performance scores and sustainability disclosure scores. After this grouping was done, logistic regression analysis was performed to test the effect of media visibility, sector, firm size, and age variables on the probability of exhibiting greenhushing behavior. The analysis revealed that media visibility had a statistically significant and positive effect on the likelihood of exhibiting greenhushing behavior. On the other hand, no statistically significant effect of the sector, size, and age variables on the likelihood of exhibiting greenhushing behavior was found.
