Abstract

Athlete burnout is one of the important psychological factors that negatively affect both the career development and mental health of athletes. Although several systematic reviews have been performed to summarize the current knowledge in the field of athlete burnout, comprehensive bibliometric analysis studies are still limited. Furthermore, although systematic literature reviews enable us to summarize the existing knowledge and identify research gaps in a specific field, they lack the ability to reveal the structural connections and intellectual interactions between research components of given field. In the present study, a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of the literature published between January 1, 2000 and November 12, 2025 was conducted to fill this gap in the field of athlete burnout. A total number of 421 articles indexed in the Web of Science database were included in the study and the data were analyzed using biblioshiny tool of bibliometrix software. According to the performance analysis results, the interest in the field of athlete burnout continues to increase rapidly among researchers, with an annual publication increase rate of 12.13%. The most productive and influential author in the field is identified as Gustafsson H., the most published journal is identified as Psychology of Sport and Exercise. Moreover, according to the results of the co-occurrence network analysis according to the keywords, five main sub-themes were identified in the field clustered respectively as, “burnout, stress and performance”, “health and psychological well-being”, “risk and adolescent athletes”, “motivation and athlete burnout measurement tools” and self-determination theory and intrinsic motivation”.

Çalışmaya Web of Science veri tabanında dizinlenen 421 makale dahil edilmiş ve veriler bibliometrix yazılımının biblioshiny aracıyla analiz edilmiştir.
