Abstract

The geometric design and surface properties of cutting tools directly influence machining performance. In drilling operations, the effects of tool geometry and coating characteristics on cutting forces, tool life, and surface quality become more pronounced. This study compares HiPIMS and cathodic arc techniques used to produce AlTiN coatings via PVD. The effects of pre- and post-coating surface treatments on drilling performance were examined. Experiments were conducted by drilling 4140 steel with Ø6.8 mm solid carbide drills. Results showed that HiPIMS coated tools exhibited lower cutting forces, less diameter deviation, and reduced wear, while surface treatments improved coating adhesion and extended tool life.
