Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine pre-service mathematics teachers' opinions about the undergraduate curriculum. The participants of the study which employed a qualitative research design are 169 (126 females, 43 males) mathematics teacher candidates selected through convenience sampling method from a university located in the Eastern Anatolia region of Turkey. Structured Opinion Form for Undergraduate Curriculum developed by the researchers was used as data collection tool. The data were analyzed by the content analysis method. According to opinions of the pre-service mathematics teachers, it was revealed that the disadvantages of previous curriculum are more than its advantages in training qualified teachers. Mathematics teacher candidates found the program advantageous in terms of subject/content and practice/application in-field knowledge, pedagogy and general culture points, while they found the previous program disadvantageous in field knowledge, pedagogy, general culture, and internship points. Besides, considering the opinions of teacher candidates for the new program, it was suggested that the advantages of the program overcome its disadvantages in training qualified teachers.
