Abstract

When the current economic structure of a country is evaluated, it is possible to say that many factors have an increasing and decreasing effect on the current balance. One of these is energy resources, which are of critical importance for the world economy. The costs and revenues generated by energy resources in oil-exporting and oil-importing countries affect the current balance of that country. This study aims to test the effect of oil prices on the current balance for the countries of Brazil, India, Indonesia, South Africa and Turkey, which are grouped as the Fragile Five between 1981-2023. While the long and short-term relationship between the variables was estimated by ARDL Bounds Test, the causality relationship was determined by Toda-Yamamoto Analysis. According to the findings; a cointegration relationship was determined between the variables in each country, and it was determined that Brent oil prices positively affected the current balance in the long term. In the short term, it was found that only the one-lagged value of Turkey's Brent oil prices had a positive effect on Türkiye's current balance, which was statistically significant. According to the Wald Test results, a unidirectional causality relationship was determined from Brent oil prices to the current balance of Turkey and India, while a unidirectional causality relationship was determined from the Indonesian current balance to Brent oil prices.
