Abstract

Digital twin technology aims to support personalised and predictive healthcare through virtual models created from an individual's clinical and physiological data and updated as new data become available. Nephrology nursing is well positioned for the integration of this technology into clinical practice because of its roles in continuous monitoring, patient education, dialysis management, and care coordination. This review examines the current use of digital twin technology in nephrology nursing and its potential contributions to kidney care. The literature suggests that digital twin-based approaches may contribute to risk assessment and personalised care planning in chronic kidney disease, whereas applications in areas such as haemodialysis and transplantation are still emerging. Digital twin-supported simulations may also offer new opportunities for nursing education and healthcare management. However, challenges related to data integration, standardisation, ethics, and data security continue to limit widespread clinical implementation. In conclusion, digital twin technology is a promising tool for data-driven and personalised nephrology nursing care; nevertheless, nursing-specific clinical validation studies are still needed.
