Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine how the new visual language of vertical format, which has emerged with the transformation of traditional cinema, is reflected in vertical series and to better understand vertically shot works expected to create a new perspective in the future. In this context, the first three episodes of the series “Zirvede” (2024), which was shot vertically, were analyzed from a cinematographic perspective. Using qualitative research methods, such as content and comparative analyses, to examine the series’ cinematographic structure, this study interprets how it differs from traditional cinematographic practices. With the rise in smartphone usage, it is evident that mobile screens with a 9:16 aspect ratio have influenced viewing habits, particularly on social media. This situation has led to a redefinition of visual framing concepts and, contrary to the framing approach used in traditional cinema, which features aspect ratios such as 1.33:1, 1.85:1, and 2.35:2, 2.40:1, that emphasize horizontal width, by imposing a narrower, vertical framing ratio (9:16) on the viewer, thereby presenting a visual narrative based on a character-focused, constrained aesthetic. On the other hand, it has also been observed that the vertical format possesses a narrative structure that is far more dynamic, attention-grabbing, and emphasis-driven than the heavy and fluid nature of traditional horizontal cinematic language.
