Abstract

Aim: Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is a prevalent musculoskeletal issue causing significant psychological stress, functional limitations, and pain. It also presents a global social and economic burden due to workforce loss and decreased performance. This study investigated the effectiveness of self-myofascial release technique (SMRT) and instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization technique (IASTM) on pain, flexibility and function in CLBP patients. Method: A randomized controlled trial involving 32 patients (18-60 years) with CLBP was conducted. Participants were randomly assigned to two groups (n=16) with demographic and physical characteristics documented. The first group received SMRT, while the second received IASTM. Both groups received bilateral applications to the lumbar region for 90 seconds, twice weekly for 6 weeks. Pain intensity (Visual Analogue Scale. VAS), hamstring shortness (Straight Leg Raise Test. SLR), lumbar flexibility (Sit-Reach Test. SRT) and functional loss (Oswestry Disability Index. ODI) were evaluated before and after treatment. Resuls: Both techniques significantly reduced pain (p 0.05). Conclusion: Both SMRT and IASTM effectively reduced pain and improved flexibility in CLBP patients, with no significant difference between the techniques.
