Abstract

Aim: Individuals with chronic illnesses use healthcare services more frequently and experience poorer health outcomes because they do not receive adequate healthcare services. This negatively impacts both the psychological and social lives of patients. This descriptive study was conducted to determine COVID-19 burnout and its social impact on individuals with chronic illnesses. Method: The study was conducted with 278 patients between January and March 2022. Data were collected using a personal information form, the COVID-19 Burnout Scale, and a questionnaire on the social impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic. Results: A statistically significant relationship was found between the participants' desire to use public transportation, stockpiling food and cleaning supplies, washing their hands frequently, using masks and gloves when going out, health concerns, doubts about disease symptoms, a tendency to eat healthily, a desire to follow the news, sleep difficulties, worries about the future, questioning the meaning of life, focusing on their goals, and believing in the impact of modern medicine, and the total score on the Covid-19 burnout scale. Doubts about symptoms, sleep difficulties, health concerns, healthy eating efforts, worries about the future, focusing on goals, and stockpiling food and cleaning supplies together explained 42.6% of the variance in COVID-19 burnout. The primary predictor of Covid-19 burnout was found to be food and cleaning supply storage. Conclusion: Based on these results, problems such as insomnia and disruptions in physician follow-up appointments are emerging in association with Covid-19 burnout. It is recommended to regularly contact patients through telemedicine services, and to refer patients with high levels of COVID-19 burnout to psychologists and/or psychiatrists to prevent psychological complications that may arise from burnout.
