Abstract

It is known that severe earthquakes causing casualties and property losses take place in Turkey which is located in the AlpineHimalayan belt. Erciş town, which is the subject of this study, is located in the Van Lake Basin which is one of the most active seismic zones in Turkey. Historically, catastrophic earthquakes causing significant numbers of casualties and property losses took place in Erciş town and vicinity, which is located within 1st degree earthquake zone (in Turkey). The most important factor in the earthquakes reaching catastrophic severity is the mistakes in the site selection of settlements. The present Erciş town is located on the Erciş Plain which consists of alternations of lacustrine sediments resulting from the water level fluctuations in Van Lake and materials of various sizes brought by the Zilan Stream and its tributaries. Groundwater level is close to the surface in these soils with poor seismic properties. These soils facilitate liquefaction during earthquakes, and therefore increase the damages of the earthquake. The wrong choice of materials in the buildings, the number of stories of the buildings and insufficient use of earthquake-resistant construction technology are effective in the earthquakes reaching catastrophic severity in the region. The 2011 Van earthquakes were effective in the Van Lake Basin in general, in both urban and rural areas; however, the most severe damages were observed in the towns of Van and Erciş where the population and buildings are dense. The most significant losses are undoubtedly the casualties in the town of Erciş which experienced severe damages due to the earthquake. The number of deaths due to the earthquake was 477 in Erciş. The buildings where the people resided were also damaged. As a matter of fact, 75% of the buildings in the town were damaged with different scales of severity (24% severely damaged).Office buildings and animal shelters were also severely damaged. In fact, 84% of the office buildings (31% severely damaged) and 86% of the animal shelters (55% severely damaged) were damaged with different scales of severity. In this study, the impacts of the earthquakes that occurred in 2011 in the province of Van on the town of Erciş were investigated. The damages of the buildings (severe, moderate, slight) in the town of Erciş were determined and the distribution of damages was mapped by quarters. The distribution maps were used to determine the relationship between ground (soil) and building properties and the damage situation

Erciş'te depremin neden olduğu can kaybı 477 kişidir. İşyerlerinin %84'ünde (%31'i ağır hasarlı), ahırların %86'sında (%55'i ağır hasarlı) farklı derecelerde hasar meydana gelmiştir.
