Döneminde birçok edebî ve kültürel hadisenin yanında düşünce akımlarına da ilgi duyan Ahmet Midhat, Üss-i İnkılâp adlı kitabının “Mukaddime-i Ulâ” adlı giriş bölümünde Osmanlıcılık düşüncesinin II. Abdülhamit’in onayından geçmiş beyannamesini yapar. Dolayısıyla bu yönüyle Üss-i İnkılâp, Türk düşünce tarihi ve özellikle Osmanlıcılık ideolojisi bağlamında dönemin en önemli kaynak eserlerindendir.
