Abstract
Türkiye holds a globally strategic position, accounting for approximately 90% of the world’s pine honey production. Pine honey is not only an economically valuable product but also a significant non-wood forest product in terms of rural development and ecosystem services. This study analysed the socioeconomic structure of pine honey producers, production conditions, level of organisation, use of mechanisation, and marketing strategies. It also identifies the key threats to the sustainability of production and offers solution-oriented recommendations. This research is based on data collected through surveys conducted with 379 beekeeping enterprises engaged in pine honey production in the provinces of Muğla, Aydın, and İzmir. The findings were evaluated based on groups formed according to the provinces in which the enterprises operate, thus providing a foundation for producer-oriented policies and strategic planning to enhance sectoral capacity. The results reveal that the producer population is aging, and education and organisation levels remain inadequate. Lack of social security and financial difficulties threaten economic sustainability, while ORKÖY supports are not effectively utilized. Moreover, the use of modern equipment and the production of other bee products remain at very low levels. Colony losses have increased due to diseases, climate change, and a shortage of suitable migration sites. In marketing, wholesalers and traders play a dominant role, which adversely affects producer incomes. In this context, it is recommended to promote different marketing channels, such as direct sales and contract production, encourage youth participation in the sector, expand training activities, strengthen producer organisations, and increase the level of mechanisation.
