Abstract
The çintemani motif occupies a significant place in Turkish art both aesthetically and symbolically, representing a deeply rooted ornamental element whose origins can be traced back to Central Asian cultures. This study examines the çintemani motif, widely employed in Ottoman traditional Turkish arts, as not merely a decorative element but also as a symbolic visual language associated with concepts of power, sovereignty, legitimacy, and protection. Interpretations in the existing literature that attribute the origin of the motif primarily to Buddhist and Far Eastern traditions have been reconsidered in light of Ottoman archival documents, written sources, and artistic works. The principal argument of this study is that the ornament referred to as “çintemani” in Ottoman art derives from leopard spots and pelengî (tiger skin) patterns, constituting a decorative system embedded with local and ideological meanings. Within the scope of the study, examinations conducted on tiles, ceramics, textiles, woven fabrics, woodwork, metalwork, miniatures, illumination, leather, and stone artifacts reveal that the çintemani motif demonstrates an interdisciplinary continuity across Ottoman traditional arts. The extensive use of the motif, particularly on objects of power and representation produced in palace workshops—such as kaftans, thrones, shields, and decorative tughras—indicates its close association with notions of rulership and imperial symbolism. Furthermore, the presence of the çintemani motif on objects intended for daily use suggests that the visual language of authority extended into the broader social sphere through material culture. This study demonstrates that the çintemani motif in Ottoman traditional arts functioned not only as an ornamental element, but also as a consciously preferred visual language carrying strong symbolic meanings, and it reevaluates the position of the motif within Ottoman traditional arts through a holistic perspective.
