Abstract

Soil erosion which is in general studied under two headings named as natural and geological erosion and accelerated erosion leads to the movement of soil on earth into the seas and lakes day by day. In recent years, soil as one of the natural resources from which was benefited for thousands of years were much more utilized due to rapid increases in world population. Thus, farming on inclined terrains was also initiated besides flat terrains as the force on the utilization of soil was gradually increased. On the other hand, the areas which must be utilized as rangeland and forest land were also opened to farming. Consequently, the more intense use of soil for different purposes together with the negative interventions on the environment brought with a serious environmental problem such as erosion. The goal of this study is to calculate the amount of sediments lost during the erosion occurred in the close environment of Antakya which is the city center of Hatay. In this context, RUSLE method in which Rainfall erosivity (R), Soil erodibility (K), Length of Land Slope (LS), Land Cover (C) and Support Practice Factor (P) involved were used. According to the analysis, it was calculated that the loss of soil in the study area was between 0 and 26.02 ton/ha/year. Moreover, it was determined that 22 % of the study area has severe and very severe erosion occured. This study is very important to locate the areas which are sensitive to erosion in Mediterranean region. Besides, it is helpful for the institutions and organizations who have the authority to take precautions and make decisions on their issues as an instructive work
