Abstract
The settlement in Çukur Plain which is a continuation of the Muş Plain in the north of Bitlis dates back to very old times. Snakecity in the Daron region which was the scene of the conflicts with the Sassanids during the Byzantine Period and was also used as an administrative center is an important settlement known for its architectural features and its existence is known to date back to the 6th century at the latest. Snakecity, one of the protected cities of the Daron region which was a battlefield between the Byzantine and Sassanid forces is seen to have a protected identity thanks to the marshland around it and its architectural planning. From the few ruins that have survived to the present day it is understood that the walls advancing depending on the topography were in a layout supported by cylindrical bastions. While the inner castle at the western end is supported by towers of various sizes, the eastern entrance gate of the city, which is also mentioned in John Mamigonyan’s work titled History of Daron, is protected by high towers as in the cities of Diyarbakır and Ani. Again the bastions and towers on the north and south walls are the elements that fortify the castle. The advantage provided by the gate arrangement between the two bastions forming the entrance arrangement provided an advantage to the Mamigonians during the conflicts between Mushegh Mamigonyan and the Sassanid Commander Mihran in the 6th century. The soldiers passing through the narrow gate opening were eliminated by the collaborators inside; thus, a force of 4 thousand people belonging to Mihran was destroyed. Again the fact that its surroundings looked like a swamp due to its location allowed the troops retreating after a clash in the Rahva Plain during the Muslim raids to take refuge in Snakecity. It is seen that this swamp feature was quite useful in terms of defense principles in order to easily defend the attacks and to limit the area of operation of the siege forces. It is seen that the city was roughly divided into two parts as the inner and outer castles, but only some of the ruins of the outer castle have survived to the present day. One of these is the remains of a single-nave church belonging to Christians and the other is the remains of a mosque belonging to Muslims. Considering the area where the third ruin extends and the ruins around it, it has been evaluated that it could be a larger church than the previous one. Considering the architectural features of this church which is thought to be the central church of the city and the single-nave western church it has been emphasized that they have continued their existence since early periods. On the other hand it has been emphasized that the remains of the mosque were built in the 15th century by the forces affiliated to the Bitlis Emirate which dominated the region based on a nearby mosque and a plan resembling the mosques in the center of Bitlis. The size of the area covered by the city and the remains resulting from agricultural activities indicate that many architectural works can be unearthed.
