Abstract
This study examines Bong Joon-ho’s Snowpiercer (2013) as a cinematic allegory that represents the transformation of modern surveillance practices from disciplinary society to surveillance capitalism. The theoretical framework combines Foucault’s panoptic model of discipline, Deleuze’s society of control, Bauman and Lyon’s concept of “liquid surveillance,” Zuboff’s notion of surveillance capitalism and the “Big Other,” together with Han’s discussions on psychopolitics. The research employs the method of ideological film criticism, approaching the film not merely as an aesthetic narrative but as an ideological text that reflects contemporary power relations and modes of surveillance. Within this framework, the study analyzes the transformation of modern power through the spatial organization of the film, regimes of visibility, consent, and security discourse. In line with these theorists’ concepts, it reveals that data-driven, fluid, and internalized forms of control, which have replaced panoptic surveillance, are reproduced in cinema both aesthetically and ideologically. By integrating the surveillance theories of Foucault, Deleuze, Bauman–Lyon, Zuboff, and Han, the study aims to demonstrate the interaction of disciplinary, control-based, and data-oriented forms of power within cinematic representation. The analysis of Snowpiercer shows that cinema functions not only as a critical medium but also as a site for the aesthetic re-production of surveillance itself.
