Abstract
The aim of this study is to analyse how the drug use practices of individuals who use illicit substances and have been penalised for related offences are shaped by their interaction with social space. It also aims to reveal the role of the urban environment in the production of addictive behaviour from a sociological perspective. In this context, it is investigated how the dynamics related to the city and space take place in the narratives of individuals who have been sentenced to treatment and probation for using and possessing drugs or stimulants. Within the scope of this study, which is based on field research data in which qualitative method is adopted, in-depth interviews with 72 individuals who are liable for substance abuse and related offences were conducted at the Antalya Directorate of Probation. In the research, it was tried to reveal in which areas of their lives the emphasis on space is visible in the narratives of the participants and how it intersects with their addiction experiences. The findings revealed that home, workplace and neighbourhood are important spaces in the experiences of being involved with the substance. Spatial distance and familiarity determine the relationship and experience with the substance. The fact that the participants live in marginalised areas of the city leads to the continuation of the cycle of addiction and related crimes.
