Abstract
Imam Birgivî lived during the reign of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent in the 16th century, a period considered the peak of the Ottoman Empire in political, economic, and military aspects. He was a distinguished scholar who contributed significantly to the intellectual and scholarly landscape of his time through his works in various fields of Islamic sciences. Known for his asceticism, piety, and steadfast adherence to the Ahl al-Sunnah creed, Birgivî was particularly concerned with theological matters. In addition to writing independent works on creed and kalam, he also addressed these issues in his tafsir, fiqh, and Sufi writings. Birgivî dealt extensively with the fundamental theological discussions on divine attributes, strictly adhering to the Sunni tradition, particularly in line with the Hanafi-Māturīdī school. He meticulously examined Allah’s essential and affirmative attributes, firmly rejecting any form of anthropomorphism. While he interpreted the allegorical (ḥabari) attributes metaphorically, he refrained from offering a specific interpretation of the concept of istiwā (divine establishment). He also placed significant emphasis on the attribute of creation (takwīn), treating it as an independent attribute. Regarding faith, Birgivî defined it as consisting of belief and verbal affirmation, excluding deeds as a component of faith. He refuted the views of the Kharijites and the Mu‘tazila by asserting that committing major sins does not expel a person from Islam. While acknowledging the validity of imitative (taqlīdī) faith, he emphasized the necessity of acquiring a firm, investigative (taḥqīqī) belief through reasoned understanding. Birgivî’s theological views provide crucial insights into the Ottoman Māturīdī tradition, making this study a valuable contribution to the understanding of Islamic theological discourse in the Ottoman scholarly tradition.
