Abstract
This study aimed to reveal how employment in Turkey has changed across the agriculture, industry, construction, and services sectors between 2005 and 2024. The data indicate significant shifts in the sectoral distribution of employment. Notably, while a decline has been observed in the agricultural sector, the service sector has become the primary area of employment concentration. In contrast, the industry and construction sectors have shown relatively stable but limited growth. The study also separately examined male and female employment, highlighting that despite the increase in women's labour force participation, significant inequalities between sectors persist. Women are more visible in the service sector, whereas their representation in sectors such as industry and construction remains considerably low. The COVID-19 pandemic has further exposed the fragility of female employment and demonstrated how crises deepen gender-based disparities. The findings suggest that the transformation of sectoral employment in Turkey cannot be explained solely by economic growth; it must also be analysed in the context of social structure, gender roles, and crisis dynamics. Considering the density of the youth population and the increasing annual labour supply, it is emphasised that in order to ensure the sustainability of the current employment structure, policies must focus not only on quantitative growth but also on qualitative improvement. This study contributes to the literature by addressing employment transformation in Turkey from both sectoral and gender-based perspectives. In light of the findings, it is recommended that employment policies be expanded to ensure greater female participation across all sectors, provide qualified employment opportunities for the youth workforce, and develop long-term solutions to the structural problems in the agricultural sector.
