Özet
20. yüzyılın sonlarına yaklaştığımız şu günlerde çağdaş tıp, insanlığın yakasını bırakmayan pek çok hastalığı önleyebilecek duruma geldiği halde, gelişmekte olan ülkelerde halen günde 5 yaşından küçük 40.000 çocuk hayatını kaybetmektedir. Gelişmiş ülkelerde bu oran % 3'den az olmakla birlikte, bu ülkelerin yoksul kesimlerindeki yaşam düzeyi çevresel bozulma, şiddet, aile yapısının çökmesi ve uyuşturucu kullanımı gibi çeşitli nedenlerle bu oran giderek kötüleşmiştir.
