Abstract

Embossed unglazed ceramics of the Southeastern Anatolia Region, which are exhibited in many museums of Anatolia, contain a very important group named "spheroconical" vessels, whose upper portion is hemispherical and lower portion conical. The functions of these vessels could not be determined for a long time, grenades, quicksilver containers, perfume vessels, medicine containers, fire bellows, candles and beverage containers are some options of discussion and reviews about their function. These works are formed in three parts, mouth, neck and trunk. In some works the mouth part is completely broken and not able to give any information about the form. In others, are minor cylindrical holes in the center. The neck part of the intact ones is usually with deep scratches, contoured on two edges with a shallow-looking profilation like a transition. The trunk part of pieces is usually expanded up from the neck with profiled steps, transformed into spherical shape, sharpened to the bottom. The construction technique of all of the works is the same. The trunk parts are monolithic made, and are attached on neck and mouth. The ornamentation of the spheroconical vessels are usually seen on the upper parts. In a small number of pieces the ornamentation continues till the conical section. Rather, geometric, herbal and human figures like mask forms are used as decorative elements. It can be said that these spheroconical vessels belong to the Artukid Period of the current Southeast Anatolia area of the 12th-14thcentury

12. - 14. yüzyıllara tarihlendirdiğimiz kürevî-konik kapların bugünkü Güneydoğu Anadolu Bölgesi'ndeki Artuklular'a ait olduğu söylenebilir
