Abstract
This study examines the political and military activities of Sulaymān b. Hishām, the son of the Umayyad caliph Hishām b. ʿAbd al-Malik, within a chronological framework. Although the sources do not provide sufficient information about his date of birth and childhood, it is understood that he assumed significant responsibilities particularly during his father’s caliphate. He came to prominence through his appointment as commander of pilgrimage expeditions and his leadership in military campaigns against Byzantium. During the reign of al-Walīd b. Yazīd, he was severely punished and imprisoned. In the period of Yazīd b. al-Walīd, he took part in suppressing insurgent movements and played an effective role in bringing Palestine and Jordan under control. During the caliphate of Ibrāhīm b. al-Walīd, he participated in military operations against Marwān b. Muḥammad; subsequently, he rebelled against Marwān in Ḥimṣ but was defeated and lost this struggle. In the following period, Sulaymān continued his opposition to Marwān by joining the ranks of the Khārijite leader al-Ḍaḥḥāk b. Qays. However, this alliance also ended in failure. After the ʿAbbāsids seized power, he sought refuge with the caliph Abū al-ʿAbbās and was granted temporary protection; nevertheless, he was ultimately executed on his orders. As a result of the study, it is observed that Sulaymān played an influential role not only in intra-dynastic rivalries but also in the broader political struggles of the period. The life of Sulaymān b. Hishām constitutes a noteworthy example in that it reflects the political tensions experienced during the transition from the Umayyads to the ʿAbbāsids and illustrates the roles assumed by individual actors in this process.
Özet
Bu çalışmada Emevî Halifesi Hişâm b. Abdülmelik’in oğlu Süleyman b.
