Abstract
\r\n The aim of this study is to assess the speeds silent reading and level of reading comprehension of the 8th grade students according to different variables. The study group is formed by thinking the primary schools which have different social economic backgrounds.In this frame ,in this research this study group includes 185 8 grade students attending three different public schools in towns of İzmir. In this study, speeds silent reading and the level of reading comprehension of the students are determined by using three different texts.The factors of reliability of the texts that are dealed with,are between 70 and 75. Also, some variables such as gender, the schools which students attend and educational backgrounds of students’ mothers and fathers are determined through the data gathering form. \r\n Bu araştırma, ilköğretim sekizinci sınıf öğrencilerinin sessiz okuma hızı ve okuduğunu anlama düzeylerinin çeşitli değişkenlere göre değerlendirilmesini amaçlamaktadır. Araştırmanın çalışma grubu, farklı sosyoekonomik düzeyde yer alan ilköğretim okulları dikkate alınarak oluşturulmuştur. Bu çerçevede araştırmada, İzmir ili merkez ilçelerdeki üç okulda öğrenim gören 185 sekizinci sınıf öğrencisi yer almaktadır. Çalışmada, öğrencilerin sessiz okuma hızlarını belirleme için üç farklı metin kullanılmıştır. Bu metinler bağlı kalınarak öğrencilerin okuduğunu anlama düzeyleri tespit edilmiştir. Söz konusu okuduğunu anlama testlerinin güvenirlik katsayıları .70 ila .75 arasındadır. Ayrıca hazırlanan “Bilgi Toplama Formu” ile öğrencilerin cinsiyet, öğrenim görülen okul ve anne-baba öğrenim durumuna ilişkin bazı değişkenler belirlenmiştir. Araştırmada ilköğretim sekizinci sınıf öğrencilerinin sessiz okuma hızlarının cinsiyete, öğrenim görülen okulun sosyoekonomik durumuna, anne ve babanın öğrenim düzeyine göre anlamlı farklılık göstermediği ortaya koymaktadır. Okuduğunu anlama düzeylerinde öğrencilerin öğrenim gördükleri okulun sosyoekonomik düzeyine göre anlamlı farklılık gösterdiği saptanmıştır.
