Abstract

Textile products represent some of the earliest examples of human production, emerging from the need to protect the human body against varying climatic conditions. Both animal- and plant-based textiles have held significant importance within early Turkish culture. Integrated with tradition, textile products have served as markers of a distinguished identity, shaped by the rich variety of raw materials from Anatolia's geography and refined through Turkish craftsmanship. In museums, the rich traditional textiles we encounter in the forms of regional costumes, carpets, kilims, prayer rugs, woven samples, lace, embroidery, handkerchiefs, and bundles reflect the creativity of the people of Anatolia with their production techniques, motifs, and regional characteristics. By carrying the trends of the past to the present, they also reveal a meaningful map of the evolution of craftsmanship skills. The textile works in our museum collections are organized according to the ongoing inventory system and are evaluated under the category of ethnographic artifacts, with their hierarchical classification often disregarded. This article suggests a systematic approach with a functional method for the classification of textile works in our museums, which also supports sustainable collection management and decision-making processes in the preservation of the artifacts. Based on studies in the literature and classification systems.
