Abstract

Accepting Islam the Turks entered a new cultural environment. In time they became the main representatives of this cultural environment and they transformed it in a civilization. This change and transformation occurred as a mutual influence. The mutual influence in question affected not only Turkish material life but also their social and art life and as a result of this most of the Turkish oral narrations or narrative elements are wrapped up in Islamic form. On the other side new narrations are created within struggle for other societies embracing new religion adopted and led by Turks. The most reflecting type of Turkish society fought for the religion of Islam is “ghazi” type. It is possible to see in different eposes the “ghazi” type which is the new form of the “alp” type. Other than eposes the most widespread products of this narrative tradition are legends of “the head cut off” or “martyr who doesn’t give his head”. In this study it were discussed Turkish settlements in Balkans and Kosovan Turks’ legends of the head cut off which are the most beautiful examples of the struggle for Islam. In the study the legends of the head cut off were evaluated by form and structure, content, function and context. It was determined that in Kosovo the function feature of this legends is more important than other features, that the sacralization of persons and locations which are subjects of this narrations is very powerful and that the legends are important factor in visiting the graves and the tombs of the persons in question.
