Abstract

Lorenz von Stein stands out as one of the foremost social scientists of the 19th century, profoundly influencing both his contemporaries and subsequent generations. His enduring influence continues to shape research across a multitude of fields within the social sciences, with scholars frequently turning to Stein as a pivotal figure. Surprisingly, there has been scant examination of Stein's work within Turkish literature, with only one recent exception. Furthermore, he has been erroneously characterized as a strict adherent of the Hegelian system. However, it is essential to clarify that he does not rigidly adhere to either the Hegelian system or German Idealist Philosophy. Stein conducted a comprehensive analysis of post-revolutionary France and social events, a work that can be considered an extension of Hegel's Philosophy of History, particularly its final chapter. He astutely recognized the discord between idealist philosophy and real-life circumstances, and in transcending the limitations of Hegel's system, he crafted his distinct science of reality. In light of the destructive aftermath of the revolution, resolving or managing class antagonism became imperative. In this regard, Stein drew inspiration from Fichte's "Philosophy of Action" and introduced the concept of the "acting or working state" as the means to address class antagonism. This study primarily relies on primary sources to elucidate Stein's relationship with the Hegelian system, his interpretation of Fichte's philosophy of action, his formulation of his unique science of reality, and his central placement of action within administration.
