Abstract

In this study, the relationship between economic growth and direct-indirect taxes in Türkiye from the Republic to the present was analyzed using annual data for the periods 1924-1962 and 1963-2021. In this study, which aims to examine the development of the direct and indirect tax revenues in Türkiye through the economic growth process, ARDL bounds test approach and Toda-Yamamoto (1995) Granger Causality test were used for econometric analysis. The findings of the analysis revealed that there is a one-way causality relationship from direct tax revenues to economic growth in Türkiye in the first period, while there is a bidirectional causality relationship between indirect tax revenues and economic growth. In the second period, it was concluded that there is a bidirectional causality relationship between direct tax revenues and economic growth, there is no causality relationship between indirect tax revenues and economic growth, and there is a unidirectional causality relationship from direct tax revenues to indirect tax revenues. This study presents evidence showing that the relationship between the shares of direct and indirect tax revenues in GDP and growth rates has changed over time in Türkiye, and that a transition from indirect taxes to direct taxes by changing the composition of the existing tax structure can have positive effects on the economic growth rate.
