Abstract

Olive is an important crop for Turkey and some Mediterranean Countries, and pest control is an essential process to increase yield and quality. Chemical control is widespred in pest control in olive production like in other crops due to it is easy to spray and effective in a short time after its application. On the other hand, chemical control has disadvantegous in controlling pests since pests can develop resistance particular chemical. Their widespread use cause toxicity on non-raget organisms and environment. Additionally, chemical residue on crops is a serious problem on human health. As a result, many studies have been conducted to reduce chemicals in pest control, and ‘Biotechnic Control Systems’ and natural compounds are becoming substantial. McPhail type trap with food attractans is a leading tool in biotechnic control systems, particularly in controlling of olive fruit fly (Bactrocera oleae (Rossi), Diptera:Tephritidae) that is key pest in olive grooves, and followed by pheromone traps and visual yellow traps in the years. The studies on effectiveness on the combined traps (with food attractant, pheromone, color and insecticide combination) with some repellents and deterrents and additionally on some natural compounds are becoming major and their results are notable in the pest control. In this time, mass trapping technics come into prominence and are considered important as they are very effective to reduce olive fruit fly damage alone or with the combination of chemicals or biological control technics. The researches are being continued to improve new technics in pest control strategies. It is aimed in this paper to present the studies used biotechnical methods for of olive fruit fly control.
